On Sunday, February 5, millions of individuals will gather for Super Bowl parties. Chicken wings, pizzas, sub sandwiches
and more will be consumed. The Confirmation Class at St. Jacob’s will participate in another “Souper Bowl.” The Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990 with a simple prayer said by Reverend Brad Smith of Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina:
Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat
That year 22 churches raised $5,700 in the first year. The number of groups involved has steadily grown each year, and so has the amount raised and put back into the communities. Last year (2011) 15,235 groups of young people across the country raised $9,583,338 in funds and cans of soup. St. Jacob’s confirmation class was one of those groups. On February 5 the members of our confirmation class (wearing their purple Souper Bowl shirts) will ask everyone to bring a can of soup to worship on that day and drop $1 into a soup pot. All food and funds will go to the Lake Township FISH.
